Using Flexible Cards Wisely

The essential idea

Flexible cards solve gaps, but they cannot make every structure equally strong. Their value is highest where natural completion is unlikely or where one substitution frees several connected cards.

A practical method

Protect a natural sequence first. Then place flexible cards into longer or harder groups. Avoid using one merely to finish a group that is already close to natural completion.

Good judgement at the table

Re-evaluate placement as the hand changes. Flexibility means the card can move; do not become attached to its first position.
